Vegas - Part 3

The day was cold, the wind was blowing...but the skies were AMAZING! Bright blue and clear! A beautiful contrast to the stark and vast nature of the desert landscape. Victor Sizemore a Kentucky native who now lives and works in Orange County, CA arranged this shoot. Lizzie who was kind enough to model for us is one of Victor's brides this year. Our fingers were frozen by the end of the shoot, but it was completely worth it.

Vegas - Part 2

We were able to get out of the city a couple of times, which to be perfectly honest were the highlights of my trip. I am very rooted in the Louisville area, but I must say that being out in the vast desert gave me a sence of wander lust that I have not experienced before. The red rocks were breath-taking! It was completely inspiring to shoot in such a different environment, and I loved every minute of it! So...any brides who would like to take a trip to Vegas or anywhere for that matter - just give me a call. I have so many great ideas for bridal and engagement sessions.

Baby Pictures!

Earlier this year I heard a photographer discussing the importance of creating timeless art pieces that the family can use to decorate their homes. I was inspired to do a better job documenting the growth and development of my own family. Her point was that when you (the parents) are gone the most important legacy (material legacy) you can leave are the photographs of your family. The reality is that you can't go back, if an opportunity is missed it is gone forever. If you were to visit my home you would find large gallery wraps featuring my beautiful children. I worked nine months on each of them and I am convinced that they are the greatest artistic contribution that I will ever make to this world.

I took this shot of Joshua about an hour ago, and I'm already picturing it as a 16x24 2.5 inch gallery wrap.

Vegas - Part 1

I have decided to spead the fun out over several posts! We had such a great time in Vegas, but honestly how could you not? Twelve thousand of the world's finest photographers converged on the MGM for an outstanding conference. It was so much fun to meet new people and hang with old friends. It is so important for professionals in this industry to continue their education and stay on top of new trends and tecnology.

There was a great group of Kentucky photographers this year!

The picture above was taken at a party hosted by Robert Evans...cool! Featured are yours truly, and two of my best friends Sarah Jane and Aurelia.

In our prayers!

Kristen and Keith Broady are two of the best people on the entire planet and it is a privilege to call them our friends. After we heard that two Jeffersonville officers had been shot I knew that it was his shift and immediately had a sick feeling that one of them might be Keith. We spent last night at the hospital waiting and praying. It is such an out of control feeling...just sitting for hours with very little information or updates. It just hits so close to home when you realize that life is so precious and ultimately so fragile. It was heart wrenching to see his two year old daughter playing in the waiting area completely unaware of the severity of the situation. We received word of his condition around 2am and we hope and pray that the recovery will swift and uncomplicated.

The picture above is a shot that I took about a year and a half ago. (This picture will be outdated in a couple of months when they have their first son!)

Ice Storm Bridal Session

We are always looking for fresh new ideas and ways to make our images different and unique. After a few days of being bundled up at home we decided to grab our camera gear and shoot a bridal session in the snow. I had a couple of locations in mind, but for the most part we would drive until we found a cool (in the literal sense too!) place to shoot.

Speaking of new ideas...I am headed out to Vegas this weekend for the Wedding and Portrait Photographers International convention (WPPI). We will have a great time!

I love winter weddings! Shooting outdoors in daylight is not always an option so it pushes the photographer to be more creative with location and lighting. Generally, I find that my best work happens when I am working outside of my normal comfort zone. One of my favorite shots happened with the bride and groom outside after dark.

Dana and Dan were great, the wedding was beautiful and we had so much fun working with both families. The ceremony was at Christ Church United Methodist; in fact it was the first wedding in the new sanctuary. The reception happened to be at my FAVORITE venue! The Pendennis Club is fantastic!! The staff is outstanding and the event was amazing.

Just as a note on the fire truck... :) There was an unplanned fire drill at the church! This was definitely a first for me, but as usual my philosophy is to make the most of every opportunity so we did not hesitate to take a few shots with the fire engine.

Hello Again!

My most humble apologizes to my wonderful blog readers. It may have seemed as if I fell off of the planet, but I assure you that we have been hard at work designing some fabulous new products for 2009. The first few weeks of January are possibly my favorite time of year for forward thinking, goal setting and product development. I love the chance to barricade myself in my office to work on all of the ideas and projects that have been pushed aside during the busier times of the year. Along those lines I will be headed out of town for a few days to attend KPPA - Kentucky's annual photographer's convention. I hope to come back with some fresh ideas for 2009.

Schedule a session!

A client called a few days ago wanting a print for a Christmas present, which gave me the happy opportunity to revisit some images that I shot over a year ago! After looking though the session I started to think about the importance of having your children photographed on a regular basis. This image is beautiful and timeless - what an amazing gift to pass on to future generations. I know that I am so thankful for the beautiful portraits that I have of my parents, grandparents, great grandparents and great - great grandparents. It is a wonderful legacy. But life is CRAZY and all of a sudden it is December and you are scrambling for gift ideas and it is too late to have the kids photographed. (unless you go to one of the same-day McDonalds style places - let's just throw this out there...you get what you pay for!) So...NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTION #1 give Amy Shepherd Photography a call sometime after the first of the year and schedule a session for your family! Which means that by May you can have virtually all of your Christmas shopping finished and we can even start working on some fantastic Christmas card ideas!

Kellie and Mick

Kellie and Mick are such a great couple! The story of how they met sounds like the plot for a Meg Ryan/Tom Hanks style romantic comedy. The ceremony was held at St. Bertrand downtown and the reception followed at the beautiful Pendennis club. What a fantastic venue!! It is super exclusive, but if you can pull the necessary strings to get in it is a must have for a wedding venue. The planning and details were orchestrated by Kellye Linebach. She was great to work with, and really connects with her clients. I have been so fortunate to work with such great event planners this year. If you are planning an event PLEASE find a qualified wedding professional to help - they are worth every penny that you spend. You will enjoy your day so much more if you and your mother are not stressing over all of the details. You would not even believe all of the "behind the scenes" stories of disasters that were averted because a competent professional was there to take charge. Anyway...that is my opinion!

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving! I will be celebrating with my family...and I get to sit at the big kid table this year :)

We had such a fun day! The Seelbach has such an graceful and elegant feel and I always love the opportunity to shoot at that location. Sarah and Scott were such a sweet couple and you can tell that they really enjoyed their day. Beth Torstrick did an outstanding job with the event design. All of the details were amazing and the flow of the day was flawless. Her personality is laid back and relaxed - just great to work with.

I almost titled this post "Baby It's Cold Outside!" but then I realized that would make two posts in a row with cheesy song titles. It is amazing how fast we went from unusually warm 70 degree days into what feels like winter weather. Despite numb fingers and red noses we were able to capture some fantastic images of Stephanie and Steven. They will be having a summer wedding at Yew Dell Gardens so hopefully the temperature will be a few degrees warmer. So my advice until then is to bundle up and drink some hot chocolate.

Jenny and Steve live up in the Chicago area and are huge baseball enthusiasts. Granted the local River Bats in no way rival the great legacy of Chicago baseball, but we thought it would be fun to incorporate the "Louisville Slugger" into the session. There is just something that is especially romantic about a little country church in the fall. The orange leaves and the quaint steeple gracing the vibrant blue sky. The day was absolutely beautiful; Jon and Bridget's family and closest friends were present to witness their vows and celebrate with them at the reception. The ceremony was held at Saint Joe Hill Parish and the reception followed at Hubers Winery in Starlight, Indiana.

Paul and I are headed out to the Dallas area for a photography workshop/clinic hosted by JB and DeEtte Sallee. They are uber talented wedding photographers; young, hip and at the top of their game. October has been an extremely busy, but rewarding month! In fact we photographed more weddings this month than in June. Ashley and Rob's wedding was absolutely spectacular. I always look forward to the opportunity to work with Carol Grisanti; she is an outstanding event designer and the team of vendors she puts together is second to none. The details were just incredible and the day came together beautifully. Gardencourt was decked out! The rooms inside were decorated to the hilt and the main area was draped with beautiful fabrics. Cocktail tables were scattered throughout the rose garden for a relaxed post ceremony meet and greet time. A beautiful tent accented the historic home for additional seating.

I have just been thrilled with the events we have photographed this fall. Natalie and Sean celebrated their wedding vows at St. Mary's of the Knobs Catholic Church and then we partied at Huber's Orchard and Winery. Just as an aside - the roof on the large reception hall at Huber's collapsed a few weeks ago. So to accommodate their fall and winter events they put up a semi-permanent tent on the property. I have to say that I love tented receptions and personally I thought it was a great trade.

I have really enjoyed my October weddings this year. Fall is such a beautiful time and we finally have a break from the heat and humidity. I was a June bride and if I had a do over I would definitely opt for the fall (or a tropical destination :) Paul and I had a wonderful time working with April and Jermaine! Their personalities are warm and inviting...which is obvious when you count their attendants which numbered 12+ on each side. It is easy to see that a couple will be happy together when you can tell that they are best friends as well as lovers.

We started the day getting ready at the Galt House and then stopped off in downtown Jeffersonville for a few quick shots with the girls. We met up with the guys (all 20 of them) at St. Stephens Church in Jeffersonville. The reception was at the Ali Center downtown Louisville.

I am just loving my 2009 couples! Stacy and Michael drove up from Alabama last week for their engagement session. Their wedding will be next June, and thankfully they were on top of things and booked early. My summer availability for 2009 is becoming scarce so if you are putting things off until later you might want to change the game plan.

I have no doubt that everyone recalls the crazy windstorm from a few weeks ago. In fact the news was calling it an inland hurricane. While we were receiving the brunt of the wind damage the Chicago area was getting all of Ike's rain. It was the heaviest rain that they have experienced in 137 years. I wadded through knee deep water from my car into the hotel lobby. Naturally every bride imagines her wedding day to be bright and sunny. Wedding bells ringing and birds singing in the distance. Unfortunately, mother nature doesn't always have the same plan. My advice to photographers out there is to invest in a couple of over sized umbrellas. We had a brief window when the heavy rain let up allowing us to venture outside, but of course we pushed our luck to the limit and had to finish up the bride and groom session with a bit of rain gear. The pictures are so much fun! Enjoy~

Jenna & James Engagement

I am so happy to welcome the fall this year. With out a doubt it is my favorite season. I like the jackets, sweaters and accessories that this season allows! Fall is also fabulous because I get to start working with many of my 2009 brides. This is a great time for engagement sessions and we have already photographed a few of our June and July brides for next year. Our fall availability is limited so if you want an October or Novemeber session call us ASAP.

Jenna and James were a blast! What a wonderful couple...it always makes my job easier when a couple has great chemistry. The images from their session are amazing. The day was beautiful, they were relaxed and natural and check out that sky!

The first thing that I noticed about Sarah was her fabulous smile! I think the secret to the term we've coined "photogenic" is all in the smile. If you can just let your down your guard and flash a genuine smile in the direction of the camera you will truly love the way you look in the image. The ceremony was held at the historic St. John United Church of Christ on Market Street. The original construction of the church was finished in 1848 for any history buffs out there. Following the ceremony the bridal party cruised down Bardstown Rd. in the "Pool Party Express." This was a first for me...holding onto the rail with one hand and snapping super fun shots with the other. The reception was held at the beautiful Henry Clay downtown...one of my favorite venues! As I mentioned in the previous post it was a great day. Anna and Jonathan were completely relaxed and just had fun, which is the way a wedding day should be for the bride and groom.

Holiday Orders!

It seems odd to think about Christmas while it is so nice outside, but I wanted to keep everyone up-to-date with the holiday deadlines. September is flying by and I know that October will be even crazier. Album orders must be in by October 15th to have them by Christmas. In the next couple of weeks I will re-activate all 2008 galleries for Christmas print ordering. The cut off for holiday print ordering is December 1st.

Catching Up!

Whew! What a crazy week!! I hope that all of my wonderful blog readers weathered the storm safely. It give us just a small taste of what the hurricane victims have to deal with. I have to say that Anna and Jonathan are totally awesome. We had such a great time working with this fantastic couple. Wedding photography is an important investment in documenting the start of a couples life together. However, the investment is not only in the financial sense. Couples who are willing to carefully plan the bride and groom session and spend the time it takes to create outstanding images will reap amazing results. On Saturday we started at the church and then stopped by some fun locations downtown.

I will post more pics from this event, but I could not wait to share an image that we captured at the reception. Enjoy!

Hottest Studio in Town!

Our air conditioning went out on Sunday, so we are now literally the hottest studio in town! Of course it was while we were entertaining out of town guests. Last night while I was watching the news the weather guy mentioned that the next couple of days were going to be the hottest of the summer - lucky me! Fortunately, the company who services our heating and air is fabulous and the entire unit is scheduled to be replaced tomorrow. So in the mean time I am brainstorming on where my husband should take me to dinner! Any suggestions?

Bridal Session - Virginia

This may seem a bit out of order posting the bridal session after posting the wedding. I couldn't share any of these images before Eric and Virginia were married because he hadn't seen the dress and I definitely did not want to lessen the surprise. July and August have been crazy! Paul and I met up with Virginia and Eric for dinner a few nights ago and I realized that I had completely forgotten that this post was never released. So Enjoy!

Bridal sessions are more of a Southern tradition and I must be honest...I love when I have the opportunity to photograph a bride before the chaos of the big day. There are no time constraints, and we have endless possibilities for creativity with location, lighting etc. It also allows us to focus on the important elements of the wedding day without stressing over all of the bridal shots. I was super pleased with the way Virginia's session came together.

I have been completely spoiled! This was the second Carol Grisanti wedding that I photographed this month. It is so much fun to work with a great event designer because I know that all of the details will be fabulous, the time-line flows smoothly, and the team of vendors that she puts together is stellar. It also relieves the bride and groom from fussing over all of the little "things" that inevitably pop up on the wedding day.

A couple of notes on the pictures: On the third picture (solo of the bride) I really liked the split lighting with the super traditional pose. It is a fun new twist on a conventional idea. Don't the drink umbrellas just make you smile :) My absolute favorite shot of the day was the pile of bridesmaids shoes right next to the dance floor.

Like I said before...engagement sessions are a blast. It is a bit harder to convince a bride to run through the fountains in her wedding gown! We had a great time with our downtown session. I have not photographed a session at the waterfront for a long time, so it was fun to revisit that location. Check out the clouds - what a great day!

Ashley and Rob's engagement session was a ton of fun!! We started out at their home near Cherokee Park and from there we drove around town finding lots of great places to shoot. Engagement sessions definitely rival weddings for favored status, because they allow for the time and flexibility to really work with the couple and get to know them. Another great benefit of an engagement session is that it gives the couple a chance to get over their camera nerves, so by the wedding we are great friends and the bride and groom are able to just be themselves.

The first picture is my absolute favorite...so cool!

When they choose the date they had not even considered that 08.08.08 was the most popular wedding date of the year, but luckily they will never forget an anniversary. The weather was perfect! It was the first Saturday in a long time that the heat was not blistering. The ceremony was held at St. Frances of Rome, which is a quaint little parish adjacent to the Clifton Center. Following the ceremony we moved downtown to the Seelbach. The reception was held in the Rathskeller. (The lower level of the Seelbach.) The architectural design emulates the Gothic arches of European Cathedrals; creating a dark and intimate atmosphere. Best wishes to the couple as you settle into married life!

Photo Booths!

Okay...I must admit that there is an extremely dorky side of me that LOVES photo booths. Maybe it goes back to my childhood or something, but we won't think too hard about that. Last night we photographed a super hip wedding at Mellwood, and I just had to end the evening with a souvenir from the photo booth. Curtain Call Photo Booth was set up for the entire evening and the guests absolutely loved it! They also bring a box of props for some extra creative photos. (Check out Paul's not so stylin' cowboy hat...I picked it out for him!) If you are getting married or just throwing an awesome bash you should think about including a photo booth instead of having traditional favors. Just a thought! Much to my delight I was able to talk Paul, Carol Grisanti and her fabulous side kick Lauren into joining me. I am top left, Carol is in the middle, Lauren is top right and of course Paul is front and center.

I met up with LaToya last January to begin discussing and planning the photography for her wedding. Her enthusiasm and energy is contagious and I knew that we would have a great time working together. The wedding day was so much fun! We met up with the bridal party at Mellwood Arts Center and then drove around old Louisville for some great photo opportunities. All of the pictures were completed before the ceremony, which alleviated the stress and time constraints after the ceremony. LaToya and TJ greeted their guests outside of the church, hopped into the limo and we were off to the reception. Mellwood was a great atmosphere for the party...and they could party!! Best Wishes!

Suzi & Fred

What a fantastic day! Suzi and Fred were surrounded by their closest friends and family as renewed their vows after 21 years of marriage. Since I photograph primarily weddings I have the opportunity to witness couples as they start their journey together, so it was incredibly touching to be a part of a ceremony where a couple reaffirmed their love and adoration for each other. It was such a sweet moment while we were taking pictures earlier in the day, Fred pulled Suzi close and whispered "I love you!" This is why I love my job. Throughout the day our focus was to capture the complete atmosphere of the event. The house and grounds, family and friends, smiles and hugs etc.

Also...I must give a shameless plug for Carol Grisanti who planned and orchestrated the event. Every detail was amazing! Carol always lends such elegance to an event and everything came together flawlessly. So, brides...if you haven't booked Carol yet give her a call today! Seriously, her work is outstanding.

Virginia & Eric

The day was perfect! Virginia has absolutely flawless taste. (Which you know is true because she choose me!!) Seriously, the event she designed was outstanding and special attention was given to every detail. However, before I continue with describing the day I must mention the important things first. The cake was amazing! I sample many wedding cakes throughout the year and there is no contest this was the best wedding cake I have EVER tasted bar none. Kudos to the groom's aunt you should definitely have business cards printed.

The ceremony was at St. Paul's on Bardstown Road followed by a reception at the Speed Art Museum. The art museum provided a beautiful yet sophisticated setting, and the general atmosphere was made complete by the lovely table settings and the jazz combo that serenaded the guests. Both sides of the family were generous and wonderful people which made my day completely enjoyable. The bride and groom were so thoughtful to seat us with the guests for dinner, and the sweet, sweet mother of the bride even sent us home with one of the flower arrangements.

What a wonderful couple!! I don't think that I have met two people with such sweet spirits. Emily and Tyler were high school sweethearts. Their first date was Junior Prom, and Emily wore her prom shoes on her wedding day. The day was HOT!! as one might expect in July, but the sky was blue and the sun was shining. Where to even start? I love you guys so much!! I first met Brad and Michelle awhile back and our personalities clicked immediately. We were set to go until the wedding date was changed, but through a crazy turn of events it all worked out and I was able to photograph their amazing wedding. Brad and Michelle are not only crazy in love, but have great chemistry. I have no doubt that they will still be as happy when they are 100 years old. Their wedding was at Glassworks, so we were able to incorporate much of the downtown architecture into the imagery. We had a fun time walking around downtown finding great places to shoot. I also want to say thank you to the super fabulous Julie Brock who helped shoot the wedding.

It was virtually impossible to select just a few of my favorite images to share on the blog. The day was perfect! Every little detail was in its place and looked like it was right out of Southern Living magazine. They had an outdoor wedding and tented reception at the brides home. The family farm and vineyard was an absolutely stunning location. We just loved Ben and Jamese, and were great friends by the end of the evening. I can't wait to finish editing the wedding!

I had such a great time with Anna and Jonathan, but who wouldn't - they are super! Their wedding is in September so hopefully we will beat the summer heat and have a beautiful fall.

It is always a great time when the bride and groom are relaxed and ready to enjoy their day. Jennifer and Mike were awesome...my compliments to Jennifer who was the most easy going bride I have ever met. There was an unexpected glitch earlier in the day, but they just rolled with the changes so gracefully. We had the perfect weather, stunning blue skies, and a great venue. The vineyards at Hubers Winery were beautiful, and we were able to take lots of great pictures around the grounds.

I need to mention a couple of fantastic vendors who helped to make the day all that it was! Carolyn at Lavender Hill designed the floral arrangements. (Her work is always amazing...if you ever have a chance swing by her little boutique in Jeffersonville!) Stephanie Isbell planned and orchestrated the event. She was great to work with! Definitely contact her if you are looking for a planner to help your day run smoothly.

Gardencourt is fabulous for an outdoor wedding...definitely a recommended venue! (FYI it used to be part of the University of Louisville's School of Music!)

The most popular wedding date of the year 06.07.08! We had a wonderful time working with Emily and Eric. I always love the opportunity to shoot at Gardencourt. I was absolutely blown away by the energy, vibrancy and amazing details that were incorporated into every part of Monica and Himanshu's wedding celebration...and celebration it was. I had a little PJ moment at a wedding I shot a couple of weeks ago. It was a traditional Indian wedding and we were waiting for the Bharat to begin. (A parade in which the groom travels to his bride on a white horse). I do realize that the horse is not technically a mustang, but I still thought the shot was amusing.

I absolutely love my job because it allows me to work with the greatest people on the happiest day of their lives. It is always such an honor to share this special time with the couple. I cannot say enough great things about Chelsy and JW - they are fantastic. I don't even need to comment on the lovely the bride and handsome groom, the pictures will speak for themselves. Chelsy and JW are great friends with Brittney and Larry who were married earlier in the year. (Check out the blog from February!) The ceremony was finished just a few minutes before the sun set, which provided an incredible backdrop for a few romantic silhouettes.

It is hard to believe that we have been home for a week now! We have spent the time getting to know our newest little family member. Joshua Alan Shepherd arrived at 4:09 am on April 15. He weighed 7 lbs 1 oz and was 21 1/2 inches long. Both Josh and Amy are doing very well. We are all SO delighted and he is beautiful.
Nathan is loving his new brother and won't let anyone else hold him!

Spring Is Here!!

I am so excited to have my windows open and smell the fresh spring air!! There is just something about this time of year...okay that was a bit romantic and sappy. I just cannot help it!! We shot our final pre-baby engagement session last night, and I cannot wait to dive into the editing. The couple was perfect, the weather was perfect...what can I say - we had a great time. The flowering trees created a romantic atmosphere, and I am thrilled with the results. I will share more images from this session once they are edited, but this one just jumped out at me. Viva Las Vegas!

We are headed to Las Vegas tomorrow morning for the annual WPPI conference! (Wedding and Portrait Photographers International) I am not a Vegas girl... but the conference is fantastic and I love to spend time with my close friends. The blizzard of 2008 decided to make its way into town on the same day that Andrea and Seth had chosen for their wedding. The event was held at the Frazier Arms Museum, so we stayed downtown at a hotel the night before to ensure that we would be there. Andrea was one of the most calm and collected brides that I have worked with, and her relaxed attitude made the day so much fun. Fortunately, the streets were cleared by wedding time and the majority of the guests were in attendance. Since the traffic was scarce we used the opportunity to photograph the couple and bridal party in the middle of Main Street. We shot some great images...enjoy!

Spring Engagement Sessions!!

As spring approaches we need to start planning for your engagement session. There are a couple of elements that will help ensure that you will be thrilled with your images. First of all...begin to envision the style and feel of your session. What do you like, what are your interests? Urban architecture, scenic parks - start by defining who you are. The more information you can give me the better I can assist you in selecting the perfect location. Secondly, plan your wardrobe accordingly. What you wear should correspond with the environment where you will be photographed. You and your fiancee need to coordinate, but not match. (If you have any questions or want to run a couple of ideas by me please just shoot me an e-mail).

So...lets book your session!! It is not to early to look ahead and get a date on the books even if your appointment will be in June. Spring is busy for all of us and my weekends will be occupied with weddings, so my availability during the week is limited. Available appointments may be viewed on my website under the calendar section. All times will be scheduled on a first come first served basis. If you have scheduling issues (ie my out of town couples) please just give me a call as soon as possible and we will look at additional times. My schedule is posted through June 2008.

Valentine's Day

I have never been much of a Valentine's Day girl. The obligatory nature of the holiday, the token gifts that are purchased on the way home, dinner reservations for 9:30 pm have been reason enough for me to avoid the holiday all together. I am definitely a romantic, but I would rather plant a rose bush together than have my husband franticly fighting over the last bouquet of roses at the local florist shoppe.

Fortunately, my prince charming knows exactly how to sweep me off of my feet. He came through the door last night with a bag of fresh bean sprouts and various other groceries. (Sweet man...he worked all day and attended his graduate class at UofL). He made a fantastic Thai chicken pasta, and we had a wonderful, quiet evening to ourselves. So...in the end I cannot be as severe on the holiday as I have been in the past. I had a lovely evening with my sweetheart and am already looking forward to next year.

Winter Blues

I hope that everyone is surviving the windy weather that we have been experiencing over the last couple of weeks. Here in the office we have been using the chilly days to learn new software programs, update the products that we offer and get ready for the great year that is ahead of us. Snow Days

Whether you are a teacher, student or just remember those days there is nothing more exciting than to wake up in the morning to the wonderful news scrolling across the bottom of your TV set. The light snow fall may have deterred the school buses, but that did not keep us from enjoying the winter weather. Nathan had already seen the snow from his bedroom window before he was up out of bed. His dad was shoveling the driveway and he insisted on participating. Nathan cleared quite a bit of snow...I was impressed.

The start to this new year has been so good for me! I love getting a fresh start, and that is what we have been doing here at Amy Shepherd Photography. We are working on fabulous new products to offer my wonderful brides, pulling the last few details together for our new studio space and booking new clients like crazy. I often hear other photographers refer to January as their slow or down time, but for us there has been nothing that even resembles down time. My mind has been a constant whirlwind of brainstorming and new ideas. Fortunately, I have my darling husband and little boy to keep me grounded.

Today I am finishing up the proofing on one of my late December weddings...check out this shot! I thought it was fun, isn't it striking how Wendy and Chip are almost a part of the painted background.

We had the good fortune to have beautiful weather for both of our December weddings...which was the case in 2006 as well. We met up with a couple of friends along the way!

They are just beautiful! Their smiles and body language leaves nothing unsaid. I have no doubt that April and Jermaine will have a exciting and happy life together, and I enjoyed every moment behind the camera watching the two of them interact. April has the type of personality that you fall in love with immediately, and I knew within thirty seconds of meeting her that I wanted to be a part of their wedding. Jermaine lives in Texas so I did not have the opportunity to meet him until the engagement session, but his relaxed and easygoing personality made the day lots of fun.

Just as a note....I could not resist posting all of the images with this semi-sepia tone effect. The pictures are equally beautiful in full color, but I loved the way the warmer tones blended with the bleak winter landscape.

Winter weddings provide and entirely different opportunity to capture moods and textures. I love the creativity that is required not to rely on sunny green landscapes. The stark scenery and white winter sky presents a backdrop that is fresh and I enjoy incorporating architectural elements into my work. Wendy and Chip had a sweet wedding in the little town of Franklin, Ohio. We happened upon a quaint old train bridge and I fell in love! I had so much fun, and fortunately no one fell in through the open slats!!

Family Christmas Card!

As promised I will share with you the annual Shepherd Family Christmas card. I am particularly fond of the card this year as it reminds me of such happy times with my sweet little family. To be honest I already have some ideas brewing for the 2008 edition. Always thinking ahead!

Speaking of forward thinking...I would LOVE to design and create cards for more of my clients. We can come up with fantastic designs using your wedding, engagement or family pictures, and it doesn't just have to be Christmas Cards. To be honest this is the PERFECT way to share your images with your loved ones. (It is cost effective as well! If you sent 10-13 of your 4x6 pictures to all of your friends and family it would cost a fortune!) Stay tuned...I plan to offer some outstanding deals on cards starting next summer!

Giant Sucker Award

We hosted our Christmas party on Saturday night and it was a blast. Despite the fog and freezing rain all of our friends and family were able to make it out for the event. (We were stocked up on pancake mix and orange juice just in case it turned into a slumber party!)

There was plenty of food, sweets, a bit of caroling and a new tradition was started per the suggestion of my good friend Sarah. Part of the evening entertainment included the first annual Giant Sucker Award, which was presented a la American Idol style. The guests were instructed to wear their worst Christmas sweater in order to compete for a prize and of course the Giant Sucker trophy. We are already busy brainstorming about the second annual competition for next year, but currently that is still classified information.

Christmas Cookies!

The month between Thanksgiving and Christmas is such a wonderful time for fun and festive activities that never seem to make the top of the priority list during the rest of the year. We are hosting our big Christmas party this week...so I have been brainstorming about the dessert portion of the menu. After mulling through several cookbooks of Christmas confections I finally came back to the idea of cookies. Simple enough! But I figure that you can eat more cookies with out feeling guilty. After all you probably wouldn't indulge in two plus pieces of cake or pie, but what is three or four cookies among friends?

While I was doing a bit of on-line shopping at macys.com to improve my cookie cutter collection and found the number cutters. Is this a mom thing or what!?!? But what a fun way to start learning numbers with my two year old. (By the way, I won't be using the numbers for my party!)

Romantic! Josh gave this necklace to Melissa as a wedding gift. The first dance is always my favorite part of the day.

I know that I have said this before... but I love, love, LOVE to photograph the weddings of my close friends. Josh and Melissa were absolutely perfect! All I had to do was point the camera in their direction and the shot was amazing. Paul and I were in school with Josh, and Melissa has recently joined the "Amy Shepherd" :) team as a fabulous assistant. This post is a bit overboard, but I struggled to narrow my choices down to nineteen images.

Dreaming of Summer Days!

So...I get a phone call yesterday morning from my dad who was en route to Louisville from a business trip to North Carolina. (Just as a side bar - my father is the director of bands at the University of Louisville). He asked if I would like to meet him at the marching band practice field to get a few shots of the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition crew filming the band. Paul and I watch the show on Sunday nights with our two year old son, so of course I was not going to pass up the opportunity to see Ty Pennington in person.

Extreme Makeover is featuring Patrick Hughes and his family for the show. Patrick has overcome his physical disabilities and has an absolutely amazing story. (Check out his bio at eliteextremedream.com) He plays the trumpet in the UofL marching band, accompanied by his father who pushes his wheelchair in formation for every rehearsal and game. The show is in Louisville this week building the Hughes family a new home. For info on how to volunteer you can find the details on the previously mentioned website.

I was thrilled when Sarah called a few months ago to tell me that she was engaged. Her wedding was everything that I envisioned it to be...beautiful, elegant and totally Sarah. It was so much fun to spend the day with her and capture all of the wonderful moments. I was equally thrilled to have the opportunity to shoot along side of Frank Becker from The Time Photography. Sarah and Frank are business partners and outstanding wedding photographers. We are all great friends, and to be honest I never stop laughing when I am with them.

About the wedding! Check out the black vintage style Vera Wang dress, and matching veil. And the cake...WOW! The atmosphere was romantic and intimate, and I just could not get over how great Sarah and Steven looked together.

Fall is one of the best times to schedule engagements sessions. The cooler weather and beautiful scenery inspire a romantic atmosphere and a bit of cuddling. We met up with Autumn and Joe yesterday evening at Yew Dell Gardens. I could not have been happier with the location, especially this time of year when some parks are beginning to look dry and dead. Yew Dell was preparing for their annual Gala event so the entire place was perfectly manicured. We took advantage of the opportunity and continued to photograph the couple until the light was no longer feasible.

Brittney & Larry

When we first began discussing the engagement session, Brittney and Larry decided on October for the cooler weather and fall atmosphere. Ironically, the temperature yesterday broke all records for this month! However, once you see their engagement images you will know that the heat did not stop us from capturing fantastic images of the couple. The wedding is planned for February, so I am hoping for a light snow to compliment our 90+ degree engagement shoot.

Saturday was the perfect day for a fall wedding. We started the day at the Brown Hotel for the fun getting ready shots and a short bridal shoot downtown. The ceremony was at Christ Church United Methodist and we had the opportunity to take some candid shots with the bridal party before the ceremony. After the ceremony the guests and bridal party enjoyed some cocktails and appetizers at the historic Whitehall Mansion. While everyone was mingling I was able to take some time photographing the couple in the gardens. Once the newly weds were announced the party was directed to a gorgeous tented reception outside on the grounds. The entire event was flawless thanks to the outstanding planning and guidance of Carol Grisanti and her team.

First of all - I must say that Ben and Amy are absolutely fantastic!!! I was at the salon on Saturday morning with the girls and one of the hair stylists asked if I was a friend of the bride. It was a sweet moment to be able to answer "yes." The first time I met Ben and Amy was when we got together to discuss the photography for the wedding, but through our meetings, the engagement session etc. I sincerely feel a bond of friendship with them. We are extremely comfortable working together which is evident in their beautiful images. Have a great honeymoon guys! I cannot wait for you to see all of your pics!

Fall Photo Session

Yesterday was wonderful! It was everything that a beautiful fall day should be. My dear friend Monica brought her 2year old son Eli to play with Nathan, and we had such a fun time with the boys. We decided to start the day with a fun photo "play" session in the creek. (This was a great idea to capture the special moments with active boys!) I would be posting a hundred pics if I put up all of the sweet images from the session.

A special thanks to my photography partner Pamela for taking time out of her day to photograph the boys - your pictures are just beautiful.

(The white shirts were finally laid to rest after picking raspberries at Hubers...the sacrifice was well worth the rewards!)

I cannot even say how much fun I had photographing Catherine and Shannon's engagement session last night. They are a fantastic couple! Catherine and I clicked from the very first time we met and they are both wonderful to work with. We will be shooting their destination wedding in Florida and then their reception back in Lexington. The session was great and I could not narrow my choices down to 3-4 so enjoy!

Last Saturday was a true celebration of the love that Sarah and John share for each other. They were excited, in love and thrilled to be "tying the knot." I have known Sarah and her family for many years (since grade school) and it was a wonderful experience to be a part of their day. We scheduled plenty of time before the wedding for the bride and groom pictures, and had a lot of fun visiting several downtown locations. We met the family and bridal party at Wesley Chapel in New Albany for a few pre-wedding shots. Sarah's planning skills trump all and we finished in record time, which allowed everyone to relax a bit before the ceremony started. Following the ceremony, the reception was held at the Forest Discovery Center in Starlight, IN. The day was perfect!

I want to give a shout out to my wonderfully talented associate photographer, Pamela. The last three images are sweet moments that she photographed.

Mackenzie & Dominic

So much has happened since last post!! Two days after we got home from vacation we received the keys to our new home - so thrilling! Then with a Friday and Saturday wedding it has been a whirlwind of excitement.

Mackenzie and Dominic choose one of the hottest days of the year for their wedding. Despite the heat they were fabulous and we were able to get outstanding outdoor images. Their wedding and reception were held at St. Bernard Church in Louisville. Congrats!

Family Vacation

St. Augustine, Florida is always one of our favorite spots to visit. Paul's parents have a condo there which makes a fabulous vacation get away for our little family. We were in great need of some rest and relaxation, so we spent most of our time enjoying the sand, sun and surf. (And building plenty of sand castles - of course.) The week provided many new experiences for Nathan...some of his favorites were floating over the waves in the ocean...(we took a couple in the face, oops!) swimming lessons in the pool and riding in the tube behind Uncle Jim's boat. I will blog more about St. Augustine later...enjoy the pics!

Yesterday was beautiful! It felt like a wonderful April day rather than the sweltering temperatures that are typical of July. We met up with the couple on Friday night to catch some special moments at the rehearsal and dinner. I enjoyed the opportunity to spend the extended time with Teddie, Adam and their bridal party. The wedding day flew by...we started the day early at the Embassy Suites in Lexington with the hair stylist and make-up artist. Once the girls were ready we proceeded via limo to Gardenside Baptist Church. The details went like clockwork and everything came off without a hitch. After the ceremony we were able to get a few fabulous out door shots before the reception started at Keeneland Racecourse.

Becca and Matt defied all superstitious nonsense and celebrated their wedding day on Friday the 13th of July. The day was perfect, beautiful...flawless! And best of all the weather was extremely pleasant for a mid-July wedding. The wedding was held at Becca's home church, North Oldham Baptist and the "coffee house" themed reception was at the Kavanaugh Life Center in Crestwood. I will not say much more - the pictures speak for themselves.
